Triple Bypass Surgery More Common閳煎嫧姊介埣?br> by Richard Knox

All Things Considered, September 3, 2004 璺?About half a million Americans undergo coronary bypass surgery each year. Vice President Dick Cheney has had the surgery. It%26#039;s a low risk procedure, with as little as 1 to 2 percent mortality and chances for full recovery. It is done urgently sometimes, as in the case of former President Clinton, when blockages are found. NPR%26#039;s Richard Knox reports.

Risks

If you%26#039;re undergoing a scheduled operation to bypass a diseased coronary artery, your risk of death is usually low, but still depends on your overall health. The risk is significantly higher if the operation is done as an emergency or if you have other significant medical conditions such as emphysema, kidney disease, diabetes or peripheral vascular disease. Complications 閳?such as arrhythmias, kidney failure, stroke and infections 閳?also may occur after heart surgery.

Some people experience a decline in memory and other cognitive functions after undergoing coronary bypass surgery. Predictors include older age, high blood pressure, lung disease and excessive alcohol consumption. Of those people who do lose some cognitive ability, most gradually regain their intellectual abilities within six to 12 months. Bypass surgery doesn%26#039;t cause dementia, but it may worsen any pre-existing mental decline, including early dementia.

I %26#039;m not sure of the survival rate, My dad had the procedure done 8 years ago after he almost died of a heart attack. He is 78 and still going strong he even rides roller coasters, hope that helps.

Mike ... i answered this on one that had been removed. The operation is more advanced as they do more of it. It a serious operation as any is, because complications can arise. It is a very common operation today thanks to advancements and new technology. He Will be fine. Thank God for advances in medicine.Let me pray right now: I ask right now Lord you will show favor to this young man his father and their entire family, i ask you would guide the surgeons hands, and he will have a speed recovery with minimal pain if none at all. That they will realize that he is in the best hand ever, being in the hands of you Lord. That every need they have will be met through your grace, and because we have asked Lord. May they realize it was you Lord that made it possible, and give you the praise and glory due you Lord, for fullfilling their need today and everyday. Amen! Its a done deal son. Let me know if you will how everything goes and i will continue to pary untill i hear. God Bless. Steve

Triple heart bypass?

I had a triple by pass three years ago,my blockage was about the same as your dads.I would bet he will do just fine.the only problem i had was depression, feeling as if i had cheeted death,I%26#039;ve been told this feeling is normal.

Triple heart bypass?

the suvival is much longer than if he did not go i would say if he did not go he would have had six months now the survival rate is 3 years maybe more

Triple heart bypass?

Very high, complications are less then 1%. One he recovers and does his rehab, he%26#039;ll not really change his activities much. They%26#039;ll actually recommend he become more active as he meets full recovery. But no need ro rush his rehab, he%26#039;ll do more as he feels up for it. He%26#039;ll recover everything he can do now.

I had one done the same way in January 2006, for 80%, 99%, 99% blockages.

Depending on other factors, this may give him 15-20 more years, and he won%26#039;t need to worry about his heart.

Full recovery will take about 4 months if he%26#039;s athletic, but he may be able to return to work in two months, which was my timetable. He%26#039;ll then need to continue to exercise almost every day, and they will encourage him to lose weight, and reduce as many risk factors as possible.

Almost 100%.

The outcome is usually good! My mother had this surgery in April. She was 46, all arteries 90% blocked and was also to go in at the right time.

Usually, the doctor told me that, of course, people die from it, but its usually(not always) the older patients, heavy smokers, and people with other issues.

I hope he does fine! And when he comes out, tell him to enjoy his second chance at life!

Triple heart bypass?

Few weeks ago, I閳ユ獫e heart attack. When angiograms were conducted the surgeons says, is triple artery blockage and the best is bypass (CABG). I%26#039;m 49 and 68kg. I will have my CABG 2 weeks from now. We all just pray to Mighty Lord for your dad and asking for speedy recovery. Dear Lord please give me the strong for my surgery.
